If I was featured in a very specific newsletter where you get to recommend whatever you want…….I would recommend the musician Swamp Dogg. And because this too is a newsletter where specifically I get to recommend whatever I want……..I am recommending Swamp Dogg. I have absolutely no idea what is up with this guy and I actually don’t need to. What I do know is that he just turned 80 and he knows how to write a perfect album title. To name an album “Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune” and then follow it up with “I Need a Job…So I Can Buy More Auto-Tune” is a type of genius I can only hope for. I was introduced to Swamp Dogg when watching Zoe Kravitz’s 2020 TV Adaptation High Fidelity and instantly fell for the song “Lonely.” The song, which my fellow resident in yearning Hanif Abdurraqib would describe as a Sad Banger, would be my second favorite thing I took away from the show. The first would be an absolutely perfect accessory that led to a 3 year ISO. The song “Lonely” was especially apt because my viewing of the series occurred during what I would refer to as Part 1 of the Pandemic. During P1 of the P I was alone in my Crown Heights apartment. I’d walk too many miles every day to fill up my time and anxiety, and not infrequently bump into my ex on Franklin Avenue.
